IgE positive results already being treated topically may benefit from immunotherapy treatment as well. IgG positive results are not applicable for immunotherapy.
A borderline or positive result will most likely require anti parasitic treatment to eliminate Sarcoptic mange.
Staphylococcus Phage Lysate (SPL®) therapy
Administration of SPL® therapy may be helpful where there are high levels of anti-staphylococcal IgE and a diagnosis of atopic dermatitis has been made. It may also be useful in cases of recurrent pyoderma, whether or not this is accompanied by high levels of antibody. It is not indicated where IgG antibodies are only identified, unless this is accompanied by recurrent infection for which no cause is identified (i.e. in idiopathic recurrent pyoderma).
Avacta Animal Health is the exclusive distributor of SPL® in the UK. A special treatment certificate (STC) is required and this is available online from the VMD.
SPL® is a whole bacterial cell lysate produced by a bacteriophage. It works via a two-fold action; firstly a phage lysate action to physically remove the infection and secondly an immunotherapy action to reduce the associated allergic response to staphylococcus.
With an excellent safety record and no known contraindications this unique treatment is the only product of its kind available to the veterinary market.
